The huge cinemas at which America screens it major and smaller productions sometimes have trouble staying in business. Spectacular, somewhat pretentious, they dominate main street in every town. Nevertheless, they still often struggle to survive. The Byrd in Richmond, Virginia being one of the finest examples of this.

For 90 years, The Capitol in Singapore – which opened in 1930 – was owned by prestigious families such as the Namazies and the Shaw brothers. The cinema was also a pawn in various historical, cultural and architectural issues. However, The Capitol always rose like a phoenix from the flames and therefore reflects cinema’s history in Singapore and the many changes the city has undergone.

The story of Pistelli, who travelled from Perpignan to Havana in 1898 with only his Pathé camera, starts in the heart of Havana, at the mouldy walls of Campo Amor. Unfortunately for him, a man from Lyon, Gabriel Veyre, had arrived a year earlier with a Lumière camera, which meant the brand new cinematograph was already known in Cuba. Penniless, Pistelli started working as a brothel tout.
