Dénes Nagy / HU, LT, DE, FR, 2021 / 103 min.
In his feature film debut, documentary maker Dénes Nagy focuses on a nasty episode from Hungarian history. Nagy’s adaptation limits itself to just three days from Pál Závada's eponymous novel that spans two decades. The hell of war depicted as a glacially-paced, visually breathtaking nightmare.
Ukraine, 1943. Hungary fights alongside the Germans along the eastern front. Corporal Semetka is from a division of Hungarian soldiers hunting Russian partisans in the Ukrainian forests. He isn’t a bad egg; he was just sent here. However, when the Hungarians walk into an ambush and are saved at the last minute, history takes a turn for the worse.
