Nesjomme
Sandra Beerends / NL, 2024 / 88 min.
Based on a wealth of personal testimony, this poignant documentary brings the Nesjomme – the soul – of Jewish Amsterdam to life, drawing on rich archival resources from the interbellum and telling the story of a young woman growing up.

Nesjomme follows the fictional character Rusha, a young Jewish woman in Amsterdam during the inter-war period. Her story, based on real testimony and the historical record, is told through letters to her brother Max, who has emigrated to the Dutch East Indies. In these letters, she describes her life in the Jewish quarter, her family and the changes taking place in the city. The film interweaves archival footage with Rusha’s stories, and sketches a colourful, poignant portrait of the Jewish community during the interbellum.
