No Regrets for Our Youth
Akira Kurosawa / JP, 1946 / 110 min.
Kurosawa’s first post-war fiction film, with Ozu’s star Setsuko Hara in the lead role. A worldly character study of a liberated young woman who comes into conflict with the militaristic Japan of the 1930s. With striking mobile, expressionist camerawork.

Freed from the strict censorship imposed by the Japanese government in the 1930s and during World War II, Kurosawa paints an intriguing portrait of a young woman who becomes a vehement critic of militaristic Japan.
Yukie is the daughter of a privileged university professor whose career is jeopardised when he speaks out against the aggressive urge for expansion propagated by the Japanese empire in the 1930s, leading to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (China) and the subsequent imposition of a reign of terror.
