Dancer and choreographer Christian Guerematchi searches for acceptance of the world around him by moving through a labyrinth of contradictions that shape his identity—black and white, male and female, present and past.
As the child of an African father and Slovenian mother, raised in socialist Yugoslavia and now living in the west, in the Netherlands, 40-year-old dancer and choreographer Christian Guerematchi has throughout his life been confronted with ‘being different’. In his autobiographical dance performance “Non Aligned Movement”, he refers to the Non-Aligned Movement, which sought to unite the divided world during the Cold War. Inspired by that movement, Christian attempts to bring together seemingly incompatible elements in his dance and in today’s world, which is again full of contradictions and polarization.
The film Non Aligned Movement uses this dance performance to portray a quest for freedom to form one's own identity, breaking through the boundaries of the stage with constant twists, contradictions, and new layers of narrative, turning the concept of identity and the associated world of prejudice, exclusion, and racism, upside down.
