Nouvelle Vague
Richard Linklater / FR, US, 2025 / 106 min.
Richard Linklater’s love-letter to filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard depicts the making of À bout de souffle: the film that became the figurehead of the nouvelle vague, the movement born in the editorial offices of film magazine Cahiers du cinéma.

Nouvelle Vague is the dramatized reconstruction of how Godard’s famous debut film came to be made. Director Richard Linklater (Slacker, Before Sunrise, Boyhood, Hitman) transports us back to the early days of the nouvelle vague movement; from editorial meetings at the offices of Cahiers du cinéma to shooting in the open air.
Prelude
Before Nouvelle Vague, you'll see the short film Ventilating the cathode ray tube (4') by Marinus Boezem from 1971. In this short experimental film, the director's face appears on the television screen. He stares at the viewer and breathes on the picture tube until he disappears.
