On the Go

Julia de Castro, Maria G. Royo / ES, 2023 / 71 min.

Taking inspiration from the guerilla spirit of Spain’s ‘La Movida’ movement (an influence on the early films of Pedro Almodóvar), writer/director duo Maria Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro deliver a queer Spanish road movie with a difference, filled with Magic Realist touches.

To be or not to be a mother, that is the question. Milagros (37) is stretching her carefree youth into her last fertile years, while Jonathan (24) seeks solace in his abandonment through an addiction to Grindr.

Milagros flees from an appointment at the artificial insemination clinic; Jonathan engineers a meeting with an old flame. Constantly moving and rekindling friendships alleviate the disorientation ensuing from the deceptive freedom offered by the early 21st century.

On the Go is a delirious road movie full of music – don’t be surprised if a mysterious mermaid with a magical crown acts as your guide.

One of the directors, Julia de Castro, and well-known actor Omar Ayuso will join us for a Q&A with the audience during the screening on April 20.
