Once Upon a Time in America

Sergio Leone / US, 1984 / 229 min.

Sergio Leone’s gripping epic about the last days of a romanticised gangsterhood and the dawn of institutionalized crime is inspired by a biography written by David 'Noodles' Aronson while in prison.

A 'fairy-tale for adults', is how filmmaker Sergio Leone characterized Once Upon a Time in America. The carefully composed film with its flashback structure focuses on the tortured friendship between Noodles (Robert De Niro) and Max (James Woods), who in Leone”s vision on gangster mythology embody the positive and negative sides of the criminal as tragic hero. A magnificent though not historically grounded sketch of 1920s New York.

May 13th: special Cinema Egzotik screening of Once Upon a Time in America, with an introduction by Martin Koolhoven and Ronald Simons.
