Park

Yo-Hen So / TW, 2024 / 101 min.

Two Indonesians in Taiwan sit in a park in the evening and talk about their day. They write poems and start a radio station for Indonesian migrant workers, in a gentle, sensitive film that shows the process of its own making.

Asri and Hasan, two Indonesian students in Taiwan, meet in a park in the evenings. They talk about what has happened that day and reflect on the events in a poem. The meetings develop a regular rhythm and gradually the idea arises to start a radio station, aimed at the many Indonesian migrant workers in Taiwan who help solve Taiwan’s labor shortages in sectors such as healthcare and construction.

The radio station slowly takes shape, albeit mainly in a poetic sense: the broadcasts start simply in the park, without concern for technology. Poetry and the everyday experiences of migrant workers merge to form an extraordinary examination, just as the entire film itself is a finely tuned experiment, born out of improvisation, yet at the same time guided by a gentle (and visible) hand.

As they chat and philosophize, the central figures in Park touch on important topics such as economic vulnerability and personal freedom. And it all takes place in the calm, almost intoxicating setting of Tainan Park in the summer, during the magical time between day and night.
