Plan 75

Chie Hayakawa / JP, FR, PH, QA, 2022 / 113 min.

Reached the age of 75? Then you can take advantage of ‘Plan 75’: state-sponsored euthanasia, with personal support. Chie Hayakawa’s first feature film is a mildly absurd, sensitive vision of the future of a Japan facing a ‘grey tsunami’.

Japan, in the near future. As its population ages rapidly, the government comes up with a scheme called ‘Plan 75’ to encourage the elderly to opt for euthanasia.

A comfortable last chapter of your life, with personal support towards the end – this is what Plan 75 consists of. Volunteers are offered money to take that last dream holiday, a free funeral, or even the opportunity to die in a five-star resort. As government bodies are bursting with senior citizens, it looks like the plan will prove popular.
