Pulse
Kiyoshi Kurosawa / JP, 2001 / 119 min.
In Tokyo a handful of alienated young people become obsessed with a website that has been taken over by spirits. Brilliant, prophetic horror film about fear of the internet in the early days of the 21st century, characterised by the ghosts of loneliness.

The first sound in Pulse is the old-fashioned dial-up tone of a modem. Taguchi is trying to save a diskette for the record shop he works at. At the same time, a shy, awkward business student logs in (‘Welcome to the internet. Have fun.’). His computer almost immediately develops issues and he is shown creepy, grainy images of people in a variety of rooms. Then a pop-up appears: ‘Do you want to meet a spirit?’.
