Red Beard
Akira Kurosawa / JP, 1965 / 182 min.
Seldom-screened Kurosawa film about the struggle between arrogant young doctor Yasumoto and head clinician Dr Kyojio Niide – a socially committed, humanist man of medicine. This was the last time Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa worked together, having previously made fifteen productions together.

Rural Japan, circa 1850. Recently graduated young doctor Noboru Yasumoto (Yuzo Kayama) is looking forward to a traineeship at a fancy clinic, but finds himself instead posted to a hospital for the poor. There, Dr Kyojio Niide (Toshiro Mifune) holds sway, a medical man – red beard and all – who is totally committed to his patients and will do whatever it takes to keep the hospital going.
