Reflection

Valentyn Vasyanovych / UA, 2021 / 128 min.

November 2014: surgeon Sergiy wants to help, and sets off for the front in eastern Ukraine, where he is captured by pro-Russian rebels. Sergiy witnesses terrible scenes. Reflection is Valentyn Vasyanovych’s stylised answer to the question of how to deal with the consequences of the horrors of war.

Prophetic words: at the première of Reflection (Vidblysk) at the Venice film festival in 2021, director Valentyn Vasyanovych said: “If you do not resist Russia’s policy of aggression, Ukraine will cease to exist as an independent state.” And: “(…) the Russian leadership’s imperialist ambitions will upset the current world order.” Six months later, Russia invaded Ukraine, while the EU and NATO looked on. The West has failed to take military action against Putin’s aggression.
