Tokyo, 1987. With a terminally ill father and a mother experiencing a nervous breakdown, 11-year-old Fuki is generally left to her own devices. She often spends time alone at home with her imagination. When she becomes fascinated by telepathy, she increasingly retreats into her own fantasy world.

In Renoir, Chie Hayakawa records the transition from childhood to adolescence through the eyes of Fuki, an 11-year-old girl with a terminally ill father. She is forced to look after herself as her mother has had a nervous breakdown due to work and the stress of caring for her dying partner.
Preliminary film
Before the screening of Renoir, you will see the 2014 short film An Elephant in a China Shop (4') by Bonne Steinz, from the Eye collection. This unique stop-motion animation film explores damage and how we deal with it, visualized through a fragile space visited by a clumsy visitor.
