Ride Lonesome
Budd Boetticher / US, 1959 / 73 min.
Classic from Columbia Pictures, which recently celebrated its centenary. Masterful western about a taciturn bounty hunter with mysterious motives who is hindered by equally inscrutable bandits.

Ride Lonesome is part of the Ranown Westerns cycle: five westerns featuring Randolph Scott in the lead made by B-film veteran Budd Boetticher for Columbia during the second half of the 1950s. His minimalist westerns, always in the same landscapes and opening with Randolph Scott as a lone rider, have filmmakers like Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese as fans. The dialogue is sparing, yet pertinent: “A man needs a reason to ride this country”.
