Shot in Technicolor in India, this is the first colour film by the French master filmmaker Jean Renoir (La règle du jeu , La grande illusion ). A film selected by Martin Scorsese, who recalls watching The River as one of his ‘most formative film experiences’.

Restored by Academy Film Archive, in association with the BFI and Janus Films, with restoration funding provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and The Film Foundation.
