ResearchLabs 2024: VjAcademy
Research Labs is a hub for students of academies and universities who flock to present their own work and view that of others. This screening VJ Academy followed by the Cherries of the ResearchLabs 2024.

VJ-ing is all about translating verbal and/or musical meaning into associative layers of moving imagery. At this year’s ResarchLabs, three VJ Academy students each share a vulnerable, dreamlike introspection
Following the VJ Academy presentations, this year's ResearchLabs Cherry Pickers will present the Cherry awards for "Most urgent work," "Most surprising Work," "Best curated programme," and the "Wild cherry," after which the winning films will be screened.
Programme

Ego & Tathata (Nadine Jongeling)
In this short film, we’ll get a glimpse of the past daily life of a young woman via outdated media, especially an old webcam. But also snippets of news, old Playboy magazines and even sound recordings of pot plants. Interruptions with i.a. (retro) 3D animations and anime provide the viewer with symbols and metaphors to make guesses about her internal world and her views on the external world. A strong sense of impermanence and melancholy is emphasized by the anything but timeless visual format, capturing anything-but unforgettable moments.

Familiar Spirit Spirit (Julian Giesen)
Julian wants to be a cross-over artist between sound and vision. During the ResearchLabs party, he’ll mix his debut album Familiar Spirit as a DJ, and simultaneously mix visuals as a VJ. Both music and imagery are etherical, dreamy, with bursts of static and energy. The landscapes are blue in more than one sense and have an infusion of distorted, abstract dreamlike AI visions.

Me-moir (Jack Julian Dijkhuijsen)
How to show you what I think? Me-moir is a ‘motional’ picture exploring the (de-)evolution of thoughts, memories, expression, and the self. Before joining VJ Academy, Jack has worked for years as a live musician in jazz and other genres. This performance is a collaboration with Ukrainian artist/dancer Io Ola Lanko (reflecting on her revisiting war-torn Ukraine) and trumpet player Mark Nieuwenhuis.
