Sanjuro
Akira Kurosawa / JP, 1962 / 95 min.
A year after the successful Yojimbo, Kurosawa shot another film featuring the samurai Sanjuro. Toshiro Mifune stars and growls to brilliant comedic effect as this bored warrior, with Kurosawa also parodying the costume drama genre.

Lazy samurai Sanjuro – who prefers to spend his days drinking and sleeping – helps an idealistic group of young warriors to unmask an evil clan – in his own unique way. The nine, naïve samurai want to take the blame for a coup. The worldly Sanjuro warns them to not take their own morals so seriously as that makes them vulnerable. He teaches them to use their smarts instead of just hard work.
