Sci Fi Horror Night
Koolhoven & Simons: Sci Fi Horror Night
In his space-set horror film Event Horizon, Paul W.S. Anderson took us to the very edge of hell onboard a deserted spaceship. With a terrifying Sam Neill and Sean Pertwee, who gets to speak the immortal line: "This ship is fucked!"

On paper, Event Horizon sounded at the time like a throwaway genre piece. And in 1997 it flopped – but now, Event Horizon is seen as one of the better examples of a sci-fi horror film. Anderson’s reputation has grown over the years, thanks in part to a few fantastic scenes: the brief but insane, grotesque glimpses of hell; the Medieval torture chamber-like design of the spaceship; and, to top it all off, the last act in which a crazed Sam Neill runs around, naked and burning, after gouging out his own eyes – Anderson really knew how to shock an audience.
Science fiction and horror have been good bedfellows for years now: in the eyes of filmmakers, and many others of course, the future looks dreadful. Ahead of the main feature we’ll spend an hour watching trailers and clips from sci-fi horror films such as Alien, The Thing, Super 8 and Cloverfield, selected by Martin Koolhoven and Ronald Simons.

Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinising the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
