Sedmikrásky
Vera Chytilová / CSHH, 1966 / 74 min.
This year, Sunsets’ outdoor screenings are dedicated to idiosyncratic female makers. Vera Chytilová, the groundbreaking female Czech nouvelle vague director from the 1960s is renowned. The odd, brazen Sedmikrásky [daisies] breaks all the rules.

Czechoslovakia, 1966, two years after the Russian invasion. Marie and Marie, two lively young women are bored. Communist culture is grey and unimaginative and so the two decide to liven things up. They dress in bathing suits and brightly coloured dresses, have a major food fight, steal what they need thereby completely disrupting the day-to-day order of things.
