Sentimental Value - Op De Vijfde Rij Live
Joachim Trier’s new film is a gently humorous drama about absent fathers, acting daughters and the sacrifices demanded by art. Ahead of the film, Cesar Majorana (Op de Vijfde Rij) talks about acting techniques with actor Laura Bakker and director Shariff Korver.

Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are clearing their deceased mother’s house when they are contacted by their father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård). Once a celebrated arthouse film director, he has lapsed into obscurity, and now wants to repair his damaged relationship with his daughters – he offers them roles in his new film.
Nora is a somewhat nervous, celebrated actress; homemaker Agnes is her robust counterpart; their father Gustav Borg is a self-obsessed auteur who has given his all to his art. These are the roles in Joachim Trier’s latest film, which won the Grand Prize in Cannes.
Through gentle humour, Sentimental Value takes a sideways look at both family relationships and the film world. Is it really only natural that a film career will have a negative impact on family life? And is silence sometimes not far more telling than a therapeutic odyssey through the family’s past? Trier doesn’t address such questions head-on, but through our empathy for the members of the Borg family.
Op de Vijfde Rij Live
This year, film podcast 'Op de Vijfde Rij' takes to the cinemas. In Eye, presenter Cesar Majorana discusses acting techniques with actor Laura Bakker and director Shariff Korver. What techniques and methods do actors use – apart from the much-discussed ‘method acting’?
Laura Bakker has won three Golden Calves (including for best supporting role in This Is Not a Christmas Movie); Shariff Korver directed, among others, Dutch Oscar entry Do Not Hesitate, and teaches acting on camera at Amsterdam’s Academy of Theatre and Dance.
'Op de Vijfde Rij' is a collaboration between VPRO Cinema and Eye Filmmuseum. You can hear previous episodes of the podcast here.
