Silent Film

Meet the Archive 2023: Silent Film

Every year, the kaleidoscopic nature of Eye’s collection is underlined when our collection experts step into the spotlights during Meet the Archive (free admission). Eye’s experts provide exceptional stories from (early) cinema history, highlighting forgotten filmmakers.

Programme

  • Use of music when screening silent films on Eye Film Player (25’)

About the use of music when screening silent films from, among others, the renowned Desmet Collection on Eye Film Player. In recent years, Eye has commissioned multiple musicians and composers to write scores for silent films from the collection. This presentation provides a selection of those works alongside a brief preview of impending commissions. The participating musicians include Duo Botasso, Yael Kat Modiano, trio Maryana Golovchenko/Pau Sola Masafrets/Cengiz Arslanpay and Daan van den Hurk. Presented by Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, the Early Cinema curator.

  • ‘Cinema’s First Nasty Women’: a DVD boxed set of 99 early films (25')

2022 saw the release of the DVD boxed set Cinema’s First Nasty Women, a compilation of silent film titles from the wild, early years of cinema. The set largely consists of comedies which centre on rebellious girls, unruly kitchen maids, vengeful spouses and die-hard suffragettes. Because not all film heroines are sweet and pretty as we have become accustomed to assume. Curator Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi helped compile this international project which involved 13 film archives including Eye. She will explain how things came about and screen a few of the films.
