Sisters of the Gion
Kenji Mizoguchi / JP, 1936 / 69 min.
Traditions clash with modern values in Kenji Mizoguchi’s Sisters of the Gion, a stylized portrait of life in Kyoto’s geisha district on the eve of WW I. Together with Osaka Elegy (1936), Sisters of the Gion was embraced as a true sensation when it was released. The film is screened as part of EYE’s Japan programme – a retrospective of 90 years of Japanese cinema – running until December this year.
