Oussama Mohammad / SY, 1988 / 106 min.
Whilst preparing for a wedding in a Syrian coastal town, the Ghazi family suffer at the hands of their tyrannical brother – symbolising the country’s oppressive political landscape. This barbed debut was banned in Syria after a single screening.

Ossama Mohammed’s mind-blowing examination of power and control, centring on Abbas, a tyrannical older brother whose similarity to Hafez al-Assad, the deposed Syrian president’s father is no coincidence. Focusing on the microcosm inhabited by a rural Syrian family highlights the psychology of life in a dictatorship. Musical score by Martin de Ruiter.
4K restoration created in 2024 by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Ossama Mohammed. Funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
