About Eye

A builder becomes embroiled in a fateful labour conflict, acting as an unwilling pawn in a high-stakes game between strikers and corrupt bosses, while striving to remain true to his ideals. Trying to play both ends off against the middle takes him to the edge of the abyss.

A young man in his twenties leaves prison having served three years for a crime he didn’t commit. He wants to make a fresh start in a new place and dreams of a job, a wife and a family. He gets part way to making this dream reality, when while working a labouring job he winds up in a fateful conflict between the corrupt boss and colleagues who are secretly planning a strike. He ends up being a pawn for one side, while trying to stick to his ideals with the other.

The Calm

Tom Tykwer managed to get Cate Blanchett to play the lead in his first international production – following in the footsteps of Krzysztof Kieslowski, who wrote the original screenplay. Blanchett is Phillipa, a woman set on killing a drug dealer – not without collateral damage.

Thriller, love story and morality parable in one: Heaven has a complex storyline that focuses in on the vengeful actions of the protagonist and the chance occurrence of a coup de foudre – a sudden eruption of love.

Ten years after Krzysztof Kieslowski’s death, his former pupil Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz made this incisive portrait. The conversations (with Juliette Binoche, Wim Wenders and cameraman Slawomir Idziak, among others), film clips and archive finds show Kieslowski as an ironic, melancholy man and humanist thinker.

Vintage Kieslowski: when the Polish filmmaker was visiting American film festivals and replied to the polite enquiry, “How are you?” with “Still alive”, everyone looked at him as if he were at death’s door.

His successful films La double vie de Véronique as well as his Trois couleurs trilogy featuring French stars Irène Jacob, Juliette Binoche and Julie Delpy revolve around kinship, identity and coincidence.

De films van Kieślowski

Renowned Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski directed the section on Warsaw for the four-hour episodic film City Life, a project by Dick Rijneke and Mildred van Leeuwaarden. Rijneke will be present at the screening to talk about this collaboration with Kieslowski.

Twelve cities from around the world are included inCity Life, the monster project in which internationally renowned filmmakers from Mrinal Sen (Calcutta) to Béla Tarr (Budapest), Carlos Reichenbach (Sao Paulo) to Ousmane M’Baye (Dakar) were invited to take part by Dutch filmmakers and initiators Rijneke and Van Leeuwaarden.
