Strange Love Affair with Ego, A
Ester Gould / NL, 2015 / 93 min.
As a child, filmmaker Ester Gould knew exactly what she wanted to be: to grow up like her two-year older sister Rowan. The picture of self-confidence, Rowan seemed to have the world at her feet: ‘Anything is possible, as long as you believe in yourself.' In this compelling film, Ester’s boundless admiration for Rowan is the beginning of an extraordinary journey to investigate the constant need to be seen.
From the Scottish countryside to Los Angeles – past various people from various stages of her sister”s life – Ester is close on her sister”s trail. Gradually, however, she discovers that the superwoman she so admired as a child never existed. As in the Greek myth about the beautiful Narcissus who falls in love with his own reflection, Rowan”s apparent self-confidence turns into self-obsession.
A Strange Love Affair with Ego is a fabulous exploration of the boundaries between healthy and unhealthy self-love. Based on the close bond between two sisters, the film rises to become a timeless tale of our relationship with our ego.
