Stroszek & La Soufrière: Ed Lachman

Highly regarded cameraman Ed Lachman is our guest to talk about his collaborations with Werner Herzog. Lachman worked on Stroszek (1977) and La Soufrière (1977) – for which they climbed an active volcano that could erupt at any moment. We are also screening both films.

Films shot by Lachman include Carol, The Virgin Suicides, Desperately Seeking Susan and the Paradies trilogy. He also made a successful foray into directing with the Lou Reed/John Cale concert film Songs for Drella (1990). Early in his career, Lachman made several films with Werner Herzog, who asked him to participate in perhaps his most daring production, La Soufrière (1977). Herzog called Lachman at five in the morning, asking him to come to Guadeloupe where a volcano could erupt at any moment. Lachman then worked on Herzog’s Stroszek (1977) and a number of documentaries Herzog made in the US. Tonight, Lachman will be present to talk about his collaborations with Herzog.

    Stroszek (1977, 108')

Herzog gave the lead role in Stroszek to Bruno S., a busker with experience of being in prison, following his performance in Kaspar Hauser – Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle. Unlike the director’s other muse, the theatrical Klaus Kinski, Bruno S. excels in attractive underacting. Just out of jail, street musician Bruno S. goes in pursuit of the American dream, which has stubbornly refused to take root in the arid, dusty soil of rural Wisconsin. An absurdist anti-fairy tale.

    La Soufrière (1977, 30')

La Soufrière gives free reign to Herzog the crazy adventurer: together with two cameramen, he travels to the volcano La Soufrière on Guadeloupe, which could erupt at any moment, looking for the sole inhabitant of the island who has refused to flee. The shot of this 'stay behind' when they find him sleeping peacefully under a tree is unforgettable, as is the apocalyptic landscape. The feared eruption never happens.

With an unorthodox oeuvre of more than seventy features, documentaries and shorts, Herzog has fascinated audiences with unforgettable stories, images and characters for more than half a century.
