Suzhou River
Lou Ye / CN, DE, 2000 / 80 min.
Intriguing neo-noir tale by Lou Ye with the Suhzou rivir in Shanghai as its dramatic guide. About a lover who throws themselves in the river, only to return as a nightclub dancer. Night time portrait of an old metropolis in grainy footage. New 4K restoration.

The river flows silently through one of China’s ancient cities, and is witness to everything that takes place on and along its banks. She’s a repository of dirt, chaos and poverty, as well as a receptacle for memories and secrets, as director Lou Ye well knows. He grew up in Shanghai, where he spent his youth on the banks of Suzhou River.
The 4K digital restoration of the original version of Suzhou River was realized starting from the original 16mm A-B negative of the image from the laboratory Kopierwerk Babelsberg, supervised by director Lou Ye.
In Eye and in national cinemas.
