Sweet Smell of Success
Alexander Mackendrick / US, 1957 / 96 min.
As publicist Sidney Falco, Tony Curtis proved he was more than just good looks. 'A cookie full of arsenic,' according to opposite number Burt Lancaster as columnist J.J. Hunsecker. Scriptwriters Clifford Odets and Ernst Lehman are responsible for the timeless cynical dialogues and one-liners.
Publicist Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) will do anything to appease the mighty columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) and safeguard his career and that of his clients. That includes wrecking the relationship between Hunsecker’s younger sister and a jazz guitarist. Backstabber Falco blackmails and manipulates away until the sweet smell of success he longs for, evaporates before his eyes.
