Sweetie
Jane Campion / AU, 1989 / 97 min.
In her much-loved debut film, Jane Campion explores the explosive relationship between modest, superstitious Kay and her wild sister Sweetie. Tender, bittersweet, eccentric, disquieting and magical: Sweetie is all of the above.

Before cementing her worldwide reputation with An Angel at My Table (1990) and The Piano (1993), Jane Campion made a name for herself with this headstrong debut. She tells the oddball story of a young woman from Sydney who has to allow her disorderly, delusional sister Sweetie to move into her apartment with her.
The rival sisters are surrounded by all kinds of strange, disquieting and magical situations – from a vague, crazy father, hints of incest and New Age spirituality to a surrealistic road trip to the West of Australia.
This instant classic reveals the family’s rotten roots in a riot of colourful images, announcing a renaissance of Australian cinema that would go on to take the film world by storm in the nineties.
Distributor Feministisch Filmkollektief Cinemien played a groundbreaking role in increasing the visibility of female filmmakers, as well as putting Jane Campion on the map by releasing Sweetie in the Netherlands.
