Sword and Sorcery Night

Koolhoven & Simons: Sword and Sorcery Night

A delicious evening of fantasy with the main feature The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982), a B-movie full of raw charm and over-the-top action that has achieved cult status in the decades since its release. Preceded by excerpts from other sword and sorcery epics.

If you believed the film posters and the VHS cover blurbs for many sword and sorcery films, you were in for a night of dragons and muscled heroes. This often proved far from true with sock puppets and skinny actors, but that didn’t spoil the fun. Today, we will take a deeper look at the subgenre with The Sword and the Sorcerer by the illustrious Hawaiian director Albert Pyun, who was an intern during the production of Akira Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzula.

Koolhoven and Simons will be scrutinising the genre film, presenting films within pretty forthright themes that have never before been screened at Eye. Expect evenings on Trucker, Grindhouse or Revenge of Nature films. A tribute to rarely screened trailers and forgotten classics, where possible in 35mm, using films from Eye’s collection.
