The Coward (Kapurush)
Satyajit Ray / IN, 1965 / 69 min.
This light-hearted satire is also a wonderful, emotionally layered chamber play about the pain of unfulfilled desire. When his car breaks down in the countryside, a scriptwriter is unexpectedly reunited with his, now married, former lover.
A scriptwriter from Calcutta (now Kolkata) is on a cross-country study trip when his car breaks down and he is offered shelter by Bimal, a rich tea plantation owner. At Bimal’s home, Amitabha realises that his benefactor’s wife, Karuna (Madhabi Mukherjee), is the woman he was in love with years ago, but lost touch with due to indecision.
