The Damned
Luchino Visconti / IT, DE, 1969 / 155 min.
Inspired by the family history of the infamous steel magnate Krupp, one of Hitler’s financiers. The Damned shows life behind the façade of big industry: as well as rich, the members of the (Krupp) dynasty prove to be immoral and extremely unhappy. This film inspired Ivo van Hove to make a play with the same title: see the exhibition All About Theatre About Film.

Ivo van Hove: ‘I always avoided making productions dealing with World War II, but I found something in this script which, I believe, is hugely important at this moment: a kind of alliance between players in the economic world and a political ideology they don’t actually believe in. But they support the regime for purely opportunistic reasons – for financial gain. A combination that can cause devastation.'
