The Edge of the World
Michael Powell / GB, 1937 / 74 min.
Powell’s first independent production – shot over four, tough months on the wild and windy Shetland Islands – is the moving tale of a remote island and its inhabitants whose way of life is threatened by the rapidly industrialising world; all told using daring cinematic techniques.
The skipper of a tourist yacht (Niall MacGinnis) reluctantly moors on the shores of the remote, currently uninhabited Scottish island of Hirta in the Hebrides where he was born. He thinks back to the days before the island’s evacuation, whereby the islanders had to decide whether to give up their way of life and move to the mainland. To decide, two childhood friends adhere to ancient traditions and climb the island’s tallest cliff. The result tear the once so tight-knit community apart.
