The Fall of Otrar
Ardak Amirkoelov / KZ, 1991 / 157 min.
Epic, hypnotising film about one of history’s most decisive battles: the siege of the now lost town of Otrar door Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Feverish, astounding images of a historical turnaround. Premiere of the 4K restoration.

A former Mongolian scout warns of an impending invasion by Genghis Khan and pays the price. After escaping from prison he tries to settle the escalating diplomatic crisis and prevent clash of cultures.
Director Ardak Amirkulov was one of the innovators of the Kazach New Wave. His monumental The Fall of Otar, written by Alexei German and Svetlana Karmalita, frighteningly and sensually depicts both the court intrigue and the wholesale slaughter on the battlefield.
Restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, in collaboration with Ardak Amirkulov. Funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
