The Man Who Fell to Earth

Nicolas Roeg / GB, 1976 / 139 min.

David Bowie shines as an alien/businessman in this cult science fiction film directed by Nicolas Roeg. The role of alien in human form, suits Bowie down to the ground in what was to be his cinematic debut.

An alien impersonates Thomas Jerome Newton, a businessman, but behind it all, he is searching for water for his desiccated planet. The boundary between 'real life' Bowie – who looked gaunt due to his coke addiction – and the alien/businessman character he portrays becomes increasingly porous. Bowie initially also composed the score. However, the latter was rejected, and he later re-used some of the music on his masterpiece Low (1977).

The beautifully photographed adaptation of Walter Tevis' novel of the same name is one of the better films by former cinematographer Nicolas Roeg (whose Don't Look Now, Bad Timing, and Performance will also screen in Eye), one of the leading post-war British filmmakers.
