About Eye

Director and scriptwriter Sharif Abdel Mawla and scriptwriter Bodil Matheeuwsen talk about their work and inspirations during Badlands, which allows new Dutch film talents to present themselves in collaboration with the Hollands Licht production company. Followed by the film they selected.

Who determines the cinematic landscape of the future? Which stories will be told and how? Talented filmmakers early days of their careers tell us. Presented by Noa Johannes. Today:
Sharif Abdel Mawla is the director and scriptwriter of the short film Jetski and the maker of the Adem Je In music video for S10, the Netherlands’ entry to the European Song Festival. He studied Media &amp; Culture at the University of Amsterdam. Before becoming a director, he worked for international brands and agencies. His first short film 7 Marokkanen en Jos (2017) premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival. Sharif’s work was featured in Nowness, Hypebeast, Another Man, i-D, Fast Company and It's Nice That and he has received various awards for it including a Webby Award, a Cannes Lion, a Lovie and a Merit.
Bodil Matheeuwsen is a scriptwriter who graduated from the Nederlandse Film Academie. She wrote the script for Porfotto, Verdwenen dagen and was co-scripted the first Dutch Netflix series Ares. She also received one of the three production contributions from Filmfonds voor Leeuwin. Bodil’s interests lie in writing idiosyncratic, small, human dramas. During her study programme, she wrote scripts about euthanasia, trauma processing and collaborated on a documentary about the debate concerning paedophilia. In 2017 she wrote La Luz Prendida, a graduation film for the LUCA School of Arts and developed a VR workshop for the Imagine Film Festival.
Badlands is a cooperation between Eye and the Hollands Licht production company. The latter wants to provide a home for new and experienced talent. A place where scriptwriters, directors, actors and producers with all manner of backgrounds and ambitions feel at home and can create their dream projects.

One of the most eccentric films ever made about the battle between good and evil, The Night of the Hunter is suffused with frighteningly beautiful images.

This classic thriller is set in rural 1930's America. Psychopathic preacher Harry Powell (a monumental Robert Mitchum role) has been arrested for grand theft auto. In prison, he tries to find out where a death row inmate has stashed 10,000 dollars, but only the latter’s children know. Once the preacher has served his time, he marries the murderer’s widow.
