The Painted Bird
Václav Marhoul / CZ, UA, SK, 2019 / 169 min.
‘A search for love’, is how director Václav Marhoul (Tobruk) described his controversial screen adaptation of Jerzy Kosinski’s horrendous novel about a Jewish boy trying to escape from the Nazis.
‘The Painted Bird is not a Holocaust film and not a war film’, said Marhoul in Venice, where his almost three-hour stark drama in black and white premiered to polarized reactions. Featuring Harvey Keitel and Udo Kier in supporting roles, the compelling lead role is performed by the young actor Petr Kotlár.
