The Pit and the Pendulum
Roger Corman / US, 1961 / 80 min.
The king of B movies – who was born a century ago – directed and produced hundreds of films including The Pit and the Pendulum, adapted from the famous Edgar Allan Poe tale. Vincent Price assumes the guise of a cruel torturer for the Spanish Inquisition.

Lord of the manor Nicholas Medina (Vincent Price), a member of an ancient Spanish dynasty, wanders confused along the corridors of his sombre castle wondering where his spouse Elizabeth (British ‘scream queen’ Barbara Steele) is.
When Elizabeth’s brother Francis arrives, seeking to answer the same question, Medina gives him a guided tour of the castle’s spectral spaces, culminating in a visit to the torture chamber designed by Medina’s father, a notorious torturer for the Spanish Inquisition.
