The Stranger (Agantuk)
Satyajit Ray / IN, 1991 / 120 min.
Satyajit Ray’s last film sketches the turbulence unleashed when a missing family member turns up on the doorstep of relatives in Kolkata. But is this ‘Uncle Mitra’ who he says he is? Mildly satirical examination of the trouble it takes to welcome ‘the other’.
No one knew he still was still alive; certainly no one expected him to turn up on the doorstep. Nevertheless, this is exactly what happens after Anila receives a letter from a man claiming to be her uncle. Manomohan Mitra says he wants to visit Anila and her family in Kolkata, and promptly appears at their door.
