Mona Fastvold takes a deep dive into the life of Ann Lee, founder of the sect The Shakers – a radical religious movement that arose in the late eighteenth century. Lee preached social equality and was idolised by her followers. An ecstatic, hypnotic film experiment.
Ann Lee (Amanda Seyfried) was one of very few female religious leaders during the eighteenth century. She and her followers, known as The Shakers, worshipped through ecstatic song and dance: shaking, delirious expressions of devotion. Ann – who lost all of her children at young ages – had a radical, unique interpretation of Holy Scripture and was a fervent proponent of pacifism and a more just society.
