The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola / US, 1999 / 97 min.
Sofia Coppola’s dreamy and subtly melancholic debut about five stunningly beautiful but tragic sisters, whose collective suicide remains a mystery. Kirsten Dunst plays a magnificent part. The film’s ethereal and enigmatic style is supported by a fine score by Air and completed with '70s hits.

Sofia Coppola's film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Eugenides is set in 1974 in the Michigan suburbs, where the five mysterious Lisbon sisters are adored by the boys from the neighbourhood. The sisters receive a strict Christian upbringing from their parents (Kathleen Turner and James Woods) and yearn for freedom, which leads to an act of despair.
