Thin red line, The
Terrence Malick / US, 1998
To mark the release of the highly praised ensemble film The Paradise Suite – about the lives of five migrants from all parts of the world who end up in Amsterdam – EYE is screening a film chosen by director Joost van Ginkel. The Thin Red Line, Terrence Malick’s philosophical exploration of the war film genre, conveys the inner feelings of combatants locked in battle. Starring Sean Penn, George Clooney and Nick Nolte.

Malick”s adaptation of James Jones”s novel about the heavy fighting between American and Japanese soldiers to gain control over the Solomon islands in the Pacific during WW II was released twenty years after his last film, Days of Heaven. To explore the mental condition of soldiers fighting to survive, Malick assembled an impressive cast that includes character actors like Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte and Sean Penn.
The Thin Red Line is both an intense war film and a serene meditation about man”s fate, the vulnerability of nature – in superb shots, Malick bears testimony to the biodiversity on the island of Guadalcanal – and the thin line between life and death.
The copy screened (35mm) is from EYE”s own collections.
