Throne of Blood
Akira Kurosawa / JP, 1957 / 110 min.
Kurosawa’s famous adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth combines contemplative tragedy with Toshiro Mifune’s explosive performance as an ambitious samurai warlord. The stylisation is inspired by Noh theatre aesthetics; Kurosawa doesn’t use a single line of Shakespeare’s text.

Japan in the sixteenth century – a period of intense warfare between feudal warlords and their warriors (samurai), competing for power. Two samurai, Washizu (Toshiro Mifune) and Miki, are lost in the woods when a soothsayer appears and makes a prediction: Washizu will rule, but Miki’s children will triumph.
