Paris, 1940: writer Georg escapes to Marseille with a visa for Mexico in his pocket as the German troops are closing in on Paris. The city turns out to be an immense transit zone which is also peopled with contemporary refugees. Christian Petzold’s adaptation of Anna Seghers’ 1942 novel was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
