Twentieth Century
Howard Hawks / US, 1934 / 91 min.
Classic from Columbia Pictures, which recently celebrated its centenary. The first screwball-comedy ever – replete with volcanic energy and witty dialogue about the battle between the sexes – one of Hollywood’s best films of the 1930s. Dutch première of the 4K restoration.

Mildred Plotka went from lingerie model to Broadway star under the name Lily Garland. Now she wants to escape the clutches of her temperamental theatre impresario Oscar Joffe, who developed her image and is also her lover. Lily flees to Hollywood, where she soon becomes a film star, while Joffe’s career spirals downward. The two meet by accident on the Twentieth Century Express. During the journey from Chicago to New York, Joffe tries to convince Lily to sign a new contract with him using all the (hysterical) tools at his disposal...
