About Eye

The credit for making the first ever feature-length animated film goes to Lotte Reininger, one of the forgotten female directors of the Weimar Republic. Based around the fables from The Thousand and One Nights, with live musical accompaniment from Esat Ekincioglu (contrabass),   Hamid Reza Behzadian (Indian guitar, lapsteel, mouth organ)   en Steven Kamperman (alto clarinet, percussion, 
melodica, compositions).

No one knows exactly how, but the fact is that Prince Achmed, mounted on a fiery magic horse, lands on the island Wak Wak. There, he immediately falls for the beautiful fairy Pari Banu. But yet another character from The Thousand and One Nights, evil magician Abanazar, soon throws a spanner in the works.

Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed

Adventure film starring Rudolph Valentino who – at the time, one year before his premature death – was at the height of his fame. Composition and Music Production students from HKU Music and Technology composed the music that will be played live by the Keuris Ensemble led by Henry Kelder.

The Eagle is loosely based on the posthumously published 1841 novel Dubrovsky by Alexander Pushkin. A lieutenant in the Russian army attracts the attention of Tsarina Catharina II. After rejecting her advances and fleeing, she issues a warrant for his arrest, dead or alive. When he hears his father was persecuted and murdered, he dons a black mask to become The Black Eagle and exact his revenge.

Josef von Sternberg – made famous in the 1930s by his collaboration with Marlene Dietrich at Paramount – made his breakthrough with this film. He was very insecure about it, so much so in fact that he skipped the première and sent his wife to see what people thought of the film.

In various thematic programmes, Eye focuses on the dynamic relationship between film and sound. Together, these programmes make up Eye on Sound, a series about the importance of film sound and (live) musical accompaniment.
