Underworld
Josef von Sternberg / US, 1927 / 80 min.
The first gangster film in Hollywood history set the bar for the genre. Criminal Bull Weed gets in trouble with a rival gang. In the meantime, his girlfriend feels attracted to a former lawyer and current alcoholic. With live music by Thijs Havens.

Josef von Sternberg – made famous in the 1930s by his collaboration with Marlene Dietrich at Paramount – made his breakthrough with this film. He was very insecure about it, so much so in fact that he skipped the première and sent his wife to see what people thought of the film.
