About Eye

In this moving image programme, artists and filmmakers dive headlong into the fever dreams of our reality. How do we connect with a climate of distrust and a planet in flux?

What can be salvaged from the archives of our collective memories? Can communication extend beyond networks to outer space? Students from the Piet Zwart Institute gather their image-making powers to explore fantasies and mythologies found in the everyday. One of the works is a single screen installation, 'Macro Landscape #2', which can be experienced in the 'Waterfront'. Exhibiting artists include Melek Bahce, Simon Becks, Kotryna Buruckaitė, Yuqing Cao, Garvan Corr, Aitan Ebrahimoff, Falcone Geddes, Luis Luján, Luca Ottmann, Pelle Nijburg, Veere Van Gent, Georgiana Barcan, Sacha Dufils, Adèle Grégoire, Shannon Liang, Martin Osowski, Tessel Schmidt and Luca Tichelman.

Inspired by the lectures of sociologists Johan Huizinga and Rogers Caillois, University of Amsterdam students offer us  ‘Playing Film’. The programmw aims to find one of the most fundamental elements of creativity, film and art: play and playfulness.

There’s something all the films in this programme have in common: they'll disconnect you for a while from everything else as you focus on one thing only – playing. The passive audience become active players in this engaging programme and by finding patterns in randomness, the films are much more connected than expected at first sight. Because play is everywhere. It is toying with absurdity and parody, cleverly playing with film language, and finding rhythm, movement and sense in chaos. Cheering for marble Play is about using rules and breaking them, and so does this programme. From crafting a Rubik’s cube to solving a crossword to cheering for a marble, our curated films are proof that ever since the dawn of cinema we can’t help but to play with whatever gets into our hands. So please don't bring popcorn, but get out of the comfortable chair and engage with your curious mind in this playful and (sometimes) competitive screening! Research Labs

Following a Hito Steyerl remark (“Time is out of joint and we no longer know whether we are objects or subjects as we spiral down in an imperceptible free fall”) students of St. Joost  challenge established hierarchies within film, image, and sound. Is our world a simulation?

In the Eye Research Lab, the class investigated the genesis of a moving image, as well as film theory, science fiction and video art. They probed the various techniques and production methods utilized in creating a film piece that explores the concept of ‘Time Out of Joint’. The class experimented with a wide variety of source material including laboratory, analogue archival family, satellite, digital, 3-D rendered and found footage. The development of the course encompassed discussions of film theory, strategical writing, collection of visuals, and examination of critical elements of moving image such as sound mixing and editing. Destabilise time The anxieties of the present world seep into the themes for the works and include ecology, memory, dystopia, social media, and emigration in the time of a pandemic. Challenging established hierarchies within film, image, and sound, the group developed individual concepts that aim to destabilise time within the observer’s perspective. Is our own world a simulation?

Master Institute of Visual Culture: Time Out of Joint

Students from the academies taking part in the Research Labs get to grips with work by students from the audio-visual departments of other art academies and universities. The winner gets to compile their very own evening in Eye.

This is going to be a long day in Eye. From ten in the morning until ten in the evening, new talent from the audio-visual courses will be allocated space to show their work. A student jury of 'Cherry Pickers' will award a 'Cherries' for best curated program, the most surprising work, the most urgent work, and a 'Wild Cherry'.
Each academy will make an hour-long presentation; the winning film will be screened in one of the filmmuseum’s state-of-the-art cinemas. 
But that’s not all: later in the year, one of the winners gets to compile an evening as part of the <a href="http://www.eyefilm.nl/en/badlands" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Badlands series</a> where new film talent presents itself through debut films, discussions and films selected by inspirational makers.
