Van Gogh
Maurice Pialat / FR, 1991
EYE on Art organizes four evenings as part of the cultural programme for Munch : Van Gogh, the exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum which involves ten other cultural organisations in Amsterdam. EYE offers a special programme on the heritage of the two artistic soulmates, including home movies (!) by Edvard Munch, the screening of Maurice Pialat’s film on Van Gogh and Peter Watkins’ Edvard Munch.

In Van Gogh, Pialat portrays the final months in the life of a tormented and mentally unstable human being. The director (who started out as a painter himself) tries to fathom Van Gogh”s psyche by examining his relationship with others (his brother Theo, his landlady, doctor Gachet and his sixteen-year old daughter).
Jacques Dutronc plays the role of his life as Van Gogh. With understated acting he expresses Vincent”s doubts and fears, but also his buoyancy and his energy. Pialat himself wrote the script.
Munch : Van Gogh is showing in the Van Gogh Museum from 25 September 2015; the focus of the exhibition is on the artistic affinity between Edvard Munch (1863-1944) and Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), two giants of West-European painting.
