Basically, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, one of the greatest film classics of all time, is about a man who chooses fiction over reality. As such, it can be viewed as an ode to cinema, but you can also distil something else namely our tendency to exult women to such an extent that we forget that they are creatures of flesh and blood. In Pose – Over hoe we kijken en wie we spelen [about how we watch and who we play], Basje Boer’s latest collection of essays, this take on Vertigo plays a central role.

The lecture she will provide this evening is not just about Vertigo, but also about associated subjects that play a role in her book such as the male gaze, the role of the victim and female archetypes in films.

Followed by a screening of Vertigo at 21:15, for which tickets will be sold separately.
